When Is The Right Time To Begin Training? Part 1

First, it is always a great time to begin training and working towards your goals, or simply, strengthening your body for life.

That being said, there are always variables:

Age
Sport(s) Goal(s)
Health Issues

Needless to say TIME is not a variable.

No matter who you are, so long as you have two legs that work efficiently, a brain that can reason, and eyes that can view the world you will always have 2 or 5 minutes available to sprint, perform jumping jacks, walk up and down stairs for fitness and health, curl a laundry basket full of clothes, and use your broomstick to perform front squats, single leg deadlifts, stretch and shoulder mobility exercises.

THERE IS ALWAYS TIME, AND ALWAYS RESOURCES SURROUNDING YOU.

Now, for age, we begin lifting items as soon as we can grasp and not let go. As we grow we carry stones, logs, drag stuff, and jump off of anything we can climb.

We even bounce off the earth when we fail at these things. We seem to survive.

To that, I say a child can begin training at any age, so long as they have good form, are never near their one rep max (or even 3 rep max) before the age of 12.

Of course, a adult should be supervising this. But the idea that a child is too young to take on more, when they clearly can, seems a little far-fetch.

Do I train young athletes with weights at Belley Fitness 12 and under?

No. But that is because I find the maturity level of children within my studio not quite up to par with potential danger if they make a mistake and hurt themselves with some weight plate, a dumbbell falling on their foot, etc.

Belley Fitness can resemble a playground at times, and to have focus, not just jump, play and possibly break stuff by accident (or on purpose as teenagers have in the studio) can be challenging.

And trying to monitor and help 2 or more kids at once potentially making a mistake can lead to missed observation of the athlete lifting the weight, or even worse, 2 kids really hurting one another.

It’s not like they’re running wild on a field or basketball court.

There’s actually really heavy weights that can literally lop off a finger or easily break a bone being used in the studio. so safety first with this age bracket.

Will my own children one day be training with weights before the age of 12?

Absolutely. So long as it interests them I will lovingly be there to guide them towards a much easier physical life through the gift and ability to perform fitness and prepare nutritious foods.

Not too mention the confidence and feeling of empowerment that comes with physical and mental strength.

Part 2 will cover sport and goal setting.

Fitter, Faster, Necessity

How would YOU become fitter quickly/er?

By condensing your workouts with intensity and increasing volume.

This is a method I’ve used for years to get ahead and rank as an athlete in multiple sports despite never training sport-specific for said sports.

It’s the same method we used with Adam at our studio to catapult him within months to one of the top SPARTAN racers in the world.
Of course, the effort put forth is up to you!

You can either produce a greater volume within the same time frame by using the same weight as your last workout, though increasing the reps, the sets and attempting to finish within the same time limit: think Belley Bursts or popularized Crossfit WODs.

Or you can increase the weight, keep the reps constant and add sets, with a slight allowance for increased time.

Either way, added volume each session is an easy approach to increasing your fitness level.
KEYPOINT: Always execute proper form and allow for deload/unload sessions every few weeks. This will keep you from burning out and help your results continue.

Happy New Year – 5 Awesomely Easy Tips for 2013!!

Wishing everyone, our clients, supporters, family, friends and subscribers a happy and wonderful New Year in 2013!

Train hard, eat smart and take time for recovery.

Recovery is probably one of the most overlooked, and underused portions of fitness and health.

  1. Aim to stretch 10 minutes a day
  2. Choose the muscles that are tightest (traps if your neck hurts, delts if your shoulders bother you)
  3. Aim to drink 64 ounces through the day. If you can do more awesome, if not, you will live 😉
  4. Add one extra 4 minute workout of “body weight only” exercises. it’ll do wonders for your health
  5. Sign up for one event each season

Adding these 5 benefits to your lifestyle each day will go a long way towards an incredible year of kicking butt and awesomeness!

Live the dream you want, create the future you’ll love

Life Lessons.. posted on Facebook 09-29-2011

Just because you’ve made the club, doesn’t entitle you to belong to it. Hard work, consistency, leadership, courage and appreciation are a few reasons to keep you here. We are all interchangeable at any given moment.

Life Lessons brought to you by the letter “L”

  1. It’s okay to be one person’s hero and another person’s villain
  2. You CAN NOT save anyone!
  3. You control your choices
  4. It’s not their fault. It’s your fault. Because you let them hold yourself down.
  5. Some things are out of your control. Completely. So stop trying to figure out how to control them.
  6. Invest emotionally in those things you have a say in… Red Sox fans… don’t take this too much to heart. You can’t win the game. And you never actually lost the game. Those men did. Cheer up J
  7. Gravity always wins.  Always.
  8. If something seems too easy. It’s because you’ve done it wrong, or haven’t calculated all the possibilities or risks.
  9. There’s no such thing as “EASY MONEY”
  10. There are such things as “Where’s my money bitch?!” “You have until 2 o’clock” and “So help me God…”
  11. If you’re out of shape. It’s because you did it to yourself. No one else.
  12. If you’re feeling uncomfortable in a room, like everyone is looking at you, it’s because someone in that room knows something about you that you wish they didn’t. Just saying. For good or bad.
  13. This number is commonly unlucky. Remember it.
  14. Like the proverbial tree, if something isn’t tweeted, did it actually happen? You can bank on it.
  15. When they say, “Dance like no one is watching” guess what, EVERYONE is watching… so be talented at it. Been to enough clubs over the years to know, that you know, who the good dancers out of 1,000 people are and who are not.
  16. If you can mentor someone, do it!
  17. If you believe that for any moment you are not a role model, you’re wrong. We are all each other’s role models. That’s why we are a society. We share sociological and psychology behaviors. We are catalysts for one another.  Energy breeds energy. Negative or Positive.
  18. Text message spelling and word automation is so much better with a $200 smart phone than a $2,000 word processing program on a notebook/PC. Funny huh?
  19. Mangoes are brilliant. And they know it.
  20. The 1970’s destroys the millennium. For a soul’s fulfillment. Let’s recreate the best of the 70’s!
  21. Less is usually more.
  22. Someone always gets hurt 😉 And the ones who are not ever really feel it. Sorry. It’s kind of true.
  23. There is no such thing as revenge. There’s stupid layered upon stupid.
  24. Hating is useless. You can pull off memories to elicit a surge or drive but outside of that moment hating is completely useless.
  25. The world is not ending. People are using it as an excuse to blow off responsibility. Don’t be that person.
  26. Reality TV is pointless. Fuck watching someone’s life. LIVE YOUR OWN.  You’ll be much happier.
  27. If someone loves you. Love them back.
  28. If you ever wonder why people are talking about you, guess what, it’s because they have nothing better to do. You finally made it. You my friend are important. So it’s your victory. Congratulations J Welcome to the world. You’ve landed.
  29. If you can make someone smile. Do it. It will bring them more happiness then you can imagine.
  30. Be selfless once per day. Completely selfless. Anonymously.
  31. The universe is reciprocal so get ready 😉
  32. You are the direct reflection of your 5 closest people. Choose wisely.
  33. John Lennon is right,
“All we are saying is give peace a chance.”
    “All you need is love.”
“As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot.”
”A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”
”Everybody loves you when you’re six foot in the ground.”
”Everything is clearer when you’re in love.”
”I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now?”
”If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do and in my art or music, then in that respect you can call me that… I believe in what I do, and I’ll say it.”
“If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there’d be peace.”
  34. 14 years ago on this day, September 29, 1996 I barely kept my right eyeball, almost broke my sternum, pushed my head out the windshield, and bled everywhere in a horrific car accident all because I was doing too much, too often, trying to accomplish everything at once, at 17. Take it easy. Revel in the moments. Learn to rest. But don’t be fucking lazy. Set lofty goals, and provide a realistic time-frame to accomplish them. I crashed to Metallica’s “King Nothing”… ironic huh?
  35. And lastly, two more great John Lennon quotes:
“I’m not claiming divinity. I’ve never claimed purity of soul. I’ve never claimed to have the answers to life. I only put out songs and answer questions as honestly as I can… But I still believe in peace, love and understanding.”“I’m not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I’ve always been a freak. So I’ve been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I’m one of those people.”

Sunday Morning Easy Movements

This Sunday we bring you our Sunday Morning Easy Movements.

A series where we’ll highlight movements and exercises that will help those stubborn, tightened body parts free up thrashed muscle tissue, range-of-motion, and bring some mobility back to your spirits.

This week’s movements starts at the beginning: The foot.

Our plantar fascia is a bundle of muscle tissue that ultimately can relieve pressure on our lower backs and virtually provide instant mobility via a quick and simple ball pattern.

I personally add this movement mornings, nightly and pre-workout.

Check it out here. You can begin with a tennis ball and later increase the intensity by using either a harder, or smaller ball to dig deeper into the tissue. I usually begin with a tennis ball and finish up with a more advanced technique.

Coaching and Mentors. Whose Yours?

Call me old-fashioned, but in order to respect a coach I have to believe in their track record. They must have walked the walk for me to trust their talk.

At Belley Fitness in Marshfield we operate on the same principles.

This year alone we are signed up for over a dozen events thus far.

As well, the average trainer in our fitness studio has logged an average of 19 days of self-training per month. But that’s not equivalent to total sessions we each train per month. If you count home based sessions we do on the side, plus our double sessions, sometimes triple sessions it’s roughly 30-35 sessions per month for each of us.

How often does your trainer workout?

Tears Like This Mid-Workout Don't Hold Our Trainers Back From Our Sessions

When it comes to hiring business coaches I’ve only invested in some of the best in my industry. Brian Grasso, Chris McCombs, Pat Rigsby, Ryan Lee, Dax Moy (Canada, West Coast, East Coast, South, UK). These men have all led by example and are proven.

My personal trainer/strength coach/fitness professional is no other than Eric Cressey. Why? Because he’s one of the best in the world for helping people, such as myself, who have suffered from major injuries in the past and still strive to excel get the results they want. Plus Eric is legit! His facility rocks and his own training is proven. He’s a beast.

Besides, after all the clients at Belley Fitness’ programs are created the last thing I want to do is write/develop my own.

So when choosing anything in life, even your personal trainer, choose the one’s who do the dirty work and lead by example!

They are the ones who will show you, and tell you what it takes 😉

Help us help you live your dream Marshfield,
